Background
About Lindsay Eubanks
I am an occupational therapist with over 22 years of experience. My pediatric experience includes early intervention, outpatient clinic, skilled nursing and school-based therapy. Other experience includes: adjunct faculty instructor (Anatomy and Pediatrics) and community mental health focused on developing life skills after addiction/trauma. I also have experience as a behavioral technician for in-home therapy, which uses a form of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) to provide at-home instruction. I have significant clinical experience working with children on the autism spectrum and their caregivers. Much of my role is parent education and encouragement as much as it is direct therapy with the child. It’s critical to move at a pace the whole family can tolerate when it comes to making changes to daily routines. I am not the therapist who sends home a thick packet of home exercises and expects a busy mom of 4 to follow through. I am also a mother of a child with sensory differences, so I try not to overwhelm parents with too many ideas at once. I am a good listener, a great encourager, and am patient with the process. The goal of therapy is for a child to be able to participate in daily life routines that are priorities for them and the family. This shows up in my evaluation, progress monitoring and outcome measures. While I will always do an assessment that will ensure therapy will be reimbursed, I also try to focus on participation based outcome measures to show meaningful progress in functional skills and meaningful life activities. These can include things such as the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) and The Child and Adolescent Scale of Participation (CASP). When a treatment goal is focused on function and increasing participation in activities of daily living, it’s hard to argue that it’s not medically necessary! For example, I’m more concerned that a child can use their motor skills to participate and increase their independence in dressing and toileting routines rather than a child scoring in the average range on a motor test. Some of my strengths include program and system development, thorough functional assessment, setting functional goals that are family and child-centered and providing OT interventions that are creative and successfully reimbursed by third party payers. I also am certified to give the Enneagram Personality Test, which has given me skills to be flexible working on teams with many different types of people.
