About Lipe Mendes

My expertise comprises mostly edge-of-field technologies (e.g, wetlands) as drainage filters in agricultural catchments in order to reduce the nutrient load to surface waters. These include long-term studies on operating performance, water and nutrient mass balances under specific catchment conditions (e.g, geology, climate and nutrient load), and analyses of hydrology, biogeochemistry, nutrient cycling, redox dynamics and nutrient reduction mechanisms. The analyses involve transformation reactions between the soil/sediments or filter medium and water as well as the influence of vegetation in the process. Moreover, I have experience with management methods in aquaculture ponds aiming to reduce the pollutant load and increase production, i.e, use of probiotics, water fertilization, soil bioremediation, feeding by copepods and pathogen control. I have long experience (>15 years) with field monitoring, lab work, analysis of large/multiple-source databases in statistical, graphical and GIS software, and international collaboration. I also have interest in water treatment of household and industrial effluents according to local/current demands in research and development, as well as to general investigations in watercourses.
