About Lisa Munson

Sociologist and Teaching professor at Florida State University, focusing on inequality and social justice. My research and pedagogical interests are design thinking, education, Hip Hop Culture, families, technology, and music. Courses I have taught include the Sociology of Hip Hop Culture, Sociology of Education, Deviance and Social Control, Families and Social Change, Social Problems, Introduction to Sociology, and Examining the Educational Achievement Gap Capstone. Innovating pedagogical techniques and developing undergraduate sociology courses that resonate with students and encourage them to think sociologically interests me most. Currently, I'm focused on developing techniques for teaching sociological theory and research methods to undergraduates in the Sociology of Hip Hop course. I have completed the first Sociology of Hip Hop Culture undergraduate textbook for Kendall Hunt Publishing (2019) and a preliminary edition of the Sociology of Education. My dissertation used the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study – Kindergarten cohort to examine parental expectations for their children’s educational attainment. I examined the factors contributing to deflated expectations and the degree to which change and stability in expectations are patterned by class, race/ethnicity, and gender.
