About Lise Cavin

Starting in Mexico with a degree in dentistry, Lise Cavin shifted her focus to dental hygiene soon after she moved to Canada in 1983. Throughout her 30+ years as a Registered Dental Hygienist, Lise has built a reputation for her commitment to lifelong learning and excellence in client care. She holds a Diploma in Dental Hygiene, a Provincial Instructor Diploma, and a BDScDH, earning the Joan Voris Award of Achievement and the Hu-Friedy CDHA Nevi Scholarship. As part of her studies at UBC, Lise had a unique opportunity to live and work with students from other health disciplines within an Aboriginal community in BC, and has also taken the Indigenous Cultural Competency Training through the Provincial Health Services Authority. She is interested in the integration of cultural safety into oral health care as a way to improve the oral health of Aboriginal peoples. Her literature review on the topic was published in the peer reviewed Canadian Journal of Dental Hygiene, earning a research award. Embracing the belief that everyone deserves fair and reasonable access to quality oral care, Lise has also led different projects with vulnerable populations, including the elderly and new immigrants. She is a strong supporter of interprofessional collaboration, and is listed as a trainer in the prevention, detection and intervention of elder abuse with the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists. As an elected Board Member of the College of Dental Hygienists of British Columbia, Lise remains actively involved in her profession. She is a professor in the Dental Hygiene Program at Vancouver Island University, while still maintaining one day per week in private practice. Her dedication and passion for her profession has encouraged and inspired many of her past and current students.
