Background

About Lochin Brouillard

My doctoral thesis examined the meaning of kinship and the family in medieval Europe. Beyond an exciting time spent pondering deep issues, I saw the PhD as a great opportunity for me to develop a wide array of skills and acquire experiences in different professional fields, including research, teaching, higher education administration, translation, grant writing, and even event planning.I am a passionate teacher, who is deeply invested in conveying the power of the humanities, especially of history, for building critical and research skills but also cultivating personal growth and engagement in today’s world. I am committed to making the classroom an inclusive, welcoming space in which every student feels valued and enabled to reach their potential. My academic research and teaching career have honed my skills as a critical thinker and communicator. I can articulate complex ideas and synthesize vast systems of information, think big as much as work on specific details. Going through the PhD has also taught me how to manage my time, plan and schedule tasks, and solve problems. As a doctoral candidate, I would often cumulate 5 different jobs at the same time, on top of my research. Forged in the fire of contract jobs, I have become a highly autonomous professional who can adapt to different work environments. I am a team player who enjoys getting involved in the daily life of my community. For this reason, I have been involved in the administrative boards of different organizations, from the board of the building in which I live to those of NGOs whose causes I wish to support. Above all, I have been involved in service in education at different levels. I have contributed to discussions and decisions about curriculum reform, pedagogy, infrastructure, and budget, or participated in job searches and program quality reviews. By sitting on committees and organizing conferences, I have learnt crucial skills such as negotiation, collaboration, and conflict resolution. As a scholar who received public funding, I take seriously my responsibility to share my knowledge and thus give back to the society that gave me the means to become a trained researcher and educator. I am always looking for opportunities to pass forward the help and advice I received myself. Don't hesitate to contact me!
