About Lois Flaherty

Lois T. Flaherty, M.D. is a child and adolescent psychiatrist whose current professional activities include editing, writing, speaking, and consulting. She is Past-President of the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry, and the American Society for Adolescent Psychiatry. From until 2021 she was Editor of Adolescent Psychiatry, the official journal of the American Society for Adolescent Psychiatry. She was Associate Professor at the University of Maryland in Baltimmore, where she spent the major part of her professional career and headed the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry from 1983-92. She has also held faculty positions at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University, and has worked in private practice and public and private institutional settings. Dr. Flaherty’s special interests are school and community psychiatry and adolescent psychiatry, and she has published widely in these areas. She is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and a recipient of the Schonfeld and Staples Awards of the American Society for Adolescent Psychiatry. In 2023 she received the Sidney Berman award from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for her work in school mental health.
