LOOP’ed A conclave on responsible consumption and production in design UID, NCR “If something is not designed in accordance with circular economy principles, it is not professional, responsible design — it is malpractice.” — David Grossman, President 2015–2017, International Council of Design It is argued that 80 percent of the environmental impact of products and services come from design, particularly during the early stages of design phase when key strategic decisions are made about concept, form and material. A radical change is required in the thought process of designers to minimize pressure on the environment and mitigate climate change. Designing out waste and pollution, keeping products in use and regeneration of materials has now become important part of design. A traditional linear, take, make, waste model of production is now being replaced by a circular model, where the waste itself becomes a valuable raw material, closing the 'loop’. As the climate crisis accelerates and more and more of us become acutely aware of the impact of our consumption habits on the planet, the desire for more sustainable and circular design processes is growing. While there is no single perfect solution to close the loop, we can iteratively improve our practice, learning from each other and finding inspiration from others. The ‘LOOP’ aspires to identify and bring together these organisations and the creative pioneers in the field of design who are steering the agenda of responsible consumption and production to our students at UID. The conclave will be a forum to bring together the students, organisations, industry experts and craftsmen, to sensitise, contextualise and localise through talks, sessions and workshops.
