About Lorraine Murphy

My formative training was psychoanalytic and psycho-dynamic in approach. Early on, my work mainly focused on facilitating children's and adolescents'​ emotional and social development. While working in the field with youths and families, I adopted cognitive behavioral techniques to better reach and address issues my clients were facing in the moment. I regularly led group and individual sessions. In recent years, my work has been influenced by attachment theory, mindfulness and the mind-body connection. I am a licensed creative arts therapist (in NY)/ATR-BC board certified and a licensed professional counselor focused on working with children, adolescents, adults and families in my private practice: Safe Haven Arts of Baton Rouge of LLC. In addition, I have had the opportunity to supervise employees at Division of Family Guidance (NJ) and ongoing professionals who have sought me out privately. I taught as an adjunct professor through the Art Therapy department at Saint Thomas Aquinas College for 7 years until I moved to Baton Rouge. This opportunity to connect with and foster the minds of new-comers to the mental health field has been very satisfying to me. It has rejuvenated my spirit for the work I do. I intend to continue my professional growth through: research and writing/publication, my own art-making and offering art therapy and yoga workshops. I am a Certified Yoga Instructor as of April 2020.
