About Lothar Dohse

I have always been a person who loved problem solving and enjoyed outdoor activities. I studied Mathematics because it was easy, but my desire was to become a field scientist. As an undergraduate I took Mathematics and Archeology courses, and as a graduate student I tried Mathematics, Statistics and Ecology. As a Post Doctorate I realized that I would not be financially successful as a Biologist so I switched to Computer Programming. Even though I earned significantly more as a software engineer than I did as an ecologist, I missed academia. In 1985 I joined the faculty of UNC Asheville, and have since settled into teaching Mathematics, Statistics and occasionally Humanities. Most of my non-teaching work has either been administrative or service to the community. Presently I am no longer teaching and I enjoy my lack of official duties. I spend my time doing the following:* Exploring local environments looking and photographing birds.* Reading historirical fiction novels and biographies.* Travelling to keep up wiht my family. I do not miss working at UNC Asheville.* Serving the City as Commissioner of the Multi-Modal Transportation Commission.* Organizing the subject finals of the State Math Contest.* Assessing the statistical outcomes of WNC "Girls On the Run".
