Meet WeeZee. I’m a Registered Child Psychiatric Nurse and proud Mom of 2 children; Paul & Shannon (ages 22 & 19). My nursing career started in the mid-'70's working with the team at Johns Hopkins Hospital. We defined the behaviors that today are Signs/Symptoms of the most extreme Sensory Integration Disorder, AUTISM. Later I implemented Applied Behavioral Programs within the public schools for kids with learning and behavioral issues. In 1985, I founded ACCESS Nursing & Healthcare Services. As the company was growing into to the largest & most diverse provider of healthcare personnel on the East Coast; In 1993, I gave birth to my second child, Shannon. She reacted differently to her world than her older brother. Her inconsistent, volatile responses to food, touch, sound, & people turned our home upside-down! We were referred to Specialists for her “Autistic-like behaviors.” After her diagnosis of a severe Sensory Integration disorder, I found myself running from one type of therapy or tutoring session to another. I began to observe what was happening in these sessions. 75% of the time was spent “desensitizing” Shannon through multi-sensory gross motor exercises that would wear down the underlying defensiveness of her Central Nervous System so that she could LEARN! As a parent, I realized, I had control over what was happening in Shannon’s World and decided to take those desensitizing exercises and formulate them for our home environment. It worked! Today, ACCESS Nursing & Healthcare Services continues to be the most respected Large Regional provider of Healthcare personnel in the NorthEast. My kids are in College and Shannon (with her brother Paul), through their academic Internships have translated their childhood home experience into a play world for all kids and their families. They named it after me! Our goal is that every child when challenged by their world; leaves WeeZee confidently saying, “YES, I Can”!
