About Luc Deliens

Luc Deliens, MA, MSc, PhD, qualified in Sociology and Human Ecology, is Full Professor of Palliative Care Research at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and Ghent University (UG). His research is focussing on early integration of palliative care in cancer care, palliative care in primary care and in nursing homes, public health and palliative care, and end of life decision making. He is the Founding Director of the End-of-Life Care Research Group, an interdisciplinary research group of VUB & UG in Belgium with actually over 60 researchers and other staff members At the VUB he is also Co-Chair of the Compassionate Communities Centre of Expertise. He supervised over 50 PhDs, received several scientific awards and published more than 470 papers in international general medical, oncology, geriatrics, primary care, public health or palliative care journals. In 2009, he became the first member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium to represent palliative care. Internationally, he is Chair of the Reference Group on Public Health and Palliative Care of the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) and Co-Chair of the EAPC Research Network. He was participating in, or leading on several international EU funded research projects on palliative care since EU FP5 up to H2020, incl. EURELD, PRISMA, EURO-IMPACT, ACTION, PACE, DIAdIC. Furthermore, he is or was advisor for the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO, Med8 panel), board member of the NRP67 program on end of life of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), and Member of the review Board of the national funding program on “Palliative Care Research” of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), as well as for many international journals as Associate Editor or Advisory Editorial Board member, e.g. for Annals of Palliative Medicine, BMC Geriatrics, Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, Palliative Medicine, Palliative Care & Social Practice.
