About Luca Roffia

I’m passionate about transforming research into something that truly impacts people’s lives. As Co-founder & CEO of VAIMEE, a spinoff of the University of Bologna, and as an Adjunct Professor at the same university, I work at the intersection of Semantic Web, Internet of Things, and Digital Twins — designing interoperable, human-centered solutions for sustainability, education, and innovation. Over the past two decades, I’ve had the privilege of working on European research projects that bridge academia and industry — from smart irrigation and urban farming to disaster management and data interoperability. I’ve seen how technology, when designed with people in mind, can change the way we understand and manage the world around us. My research and entrepreneurial journey share the same goal: to make complex systems talk to each other — whether they are sensors, databases, or people. I believe interoperability is not just a technical challenge, but a human one. It’s about creating shared languages that connect perspectives, disciplines, and communities. At VAIMEE, we build tools that embody this philosophy. Our projects combine scientific rigor, open data, and creativity to empower users — from farmers learning how to optimize irrigation, to students exploring the invisible dynamics of ecosystems through immersive experiences. I’m always curious, always learning, and still convinced that the best ideas are born where curiosity meets collaboration.
