About Lucia Motsa

I am a Senior Process Engineer at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), with over six years of experience in chemical engineering, bioprocessing, environmental data management, and advanced agro-processing. My work focuses on optimizing South Africa’s biodiversity through the development of high-value products ranging from food ingredients and African traditional medicines to nutraceuticals while promoting circular economy principles and supporting SMMEs. I’ve led and co-developed seven technology demonstrators accepted at TRL 6, transferred innovations to over 20 SMMEs and SMEs, and contributed to projects in the dairy, cannabis, and indigenous knowledge sectors. My research has resulted in two published articles in high-impact journals and a South African Provisional Patent pending protein protein extraction technology that supports local farmers and reduces reliance on imports. Currently pursuing a PhD in Chemical Engineering at the University of Johannesburg, I’m developing an integrated valorization technology for Cannabis sativa L. waste to produce biogas and bio-based products advancing renewable energy and sustainability goals in South Africa. I am a registered Candidate Engineering Technologist with ECSA, an ECSA Woman in Engineering Ambassador, and a contributor to Engineering Without Borders. I also serve on the CSIR Youth Forum and the Employment Equity and Skills Development Consultative Forum, where I help shape inclusive policies and empower young professionals.
