I became a T1 Diabetic at 58 yrs old with an attack that ended me up in ICU with a Glucose of 1195. I was misdiagnosed a T2 Diabetic and struggled with "not fitting into the profile". I needed a Diabetic Alert Service Dog and read books by those who purchased a trained dog and others who trained their own dogs. Being good with animals, I decided to approach my Vet to help me pick out a rescue puppy (3rd one passed her exam) and to refer me to her best choice for a private trainer. My dog passed his AKC Advanced Obedience CGC tests before he was 2 years old and the AKC tester asked who helped me. When I said "Beverly Stephens," she said "Oh, that makes sense - she takes National Obedience Awards in Dog Shows all the time." While training my dog, I continued to read everything I could get my hands on that related to getting my life back with T1D. Finally, I found a report put out by Mayo Labs that described what it was like to live with a rare form of T1D that is AutoImmune to Insulin itself. I printed out the report and faxed my primary care doctor asking for help getting to an Endocrinologist Team at Banner Health. Within 4 business days, I was sitting in his office sharing my synopsis printed out of medical history with Diabetes as well as the Mayo Lab report. He ran the extra tests to diagnose and began the process of getting me into a Continuous Glucose Monitor and Insulin Pump & both arrived on Christmas Eve 2018. I am currently employed as an Independent Medicare Sales Rep working remotely from home. I enjoy helping others with their Medicare Insurance options. With the help of my medical team, technology, and service dog, I am working in the Insurance Industry and living well with my T1D.
