About Lucy Bowditch

Since 1995, Dr. Lucy Bowditch has taught art history courses at the College of Saint Rose, where she focuses on modern art, contemporary art, and histories of photography. Every spring, she takes students enrolled in "Art Now," to New York City for seven Saturdays to see over 70 art exhibitions and meet art world professionals. Recently she took students to Paris to study modern and contemporary art in the city of light. She also has introduced several interdisciplinary courses into the curriculum including Modern Art and Literature, as well as Art through the Elements, a consideration of art history in light of earth, air, fire, and water. Dr. Lucy Bowditch coordinates the college’s Visiting Artist Program. She brings artists, critics, and scholars from around the world to the College to not only deliver public lectures but also critique the students' work. Dr. Bowditch travels as a guest lecturer and participates in conferences. She presented a paper on American Symbolist Photography at the College Art Association annual conference in Los Angeles."Courbet's Morality Tale in Two Paintings" was the topic of her paper at the Southern Humanities Council Conference. Most recently, she delivered a paper at Berkeley University on theories of photography. Alongside her work as a professor and lecturer, Dr. Lucy Bowditch has curated a number of projects, including Bowdoin Photographers: Liberal Arts Lens, a collection of photography displayed the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, and Wonderland, a presentation of six contemporary sculptors at the Arts Center in Troy, New York. She also publishes regularly, recently contributing sections public art to Art in Place: Site-Specific Art of the Americas published by Phaidon Press. Dr. Bowditch holds a PhD in art history from the University of Chicago.
