Background

About Lucy Howarth

My interests are in contemporary arts practice and twentieth century modernist art, craft and design, art histories and research, exhibition curation and art education. I have specialisms in the European Constructivist movement, twentieth century British art, the formations of art histories and representations of gender/identity. I have worked for art institutions of international standing, as a curator and researcher, including Tate and Museum Haus Konstruktiv in Zürich. I have published writing, ranging from articles in academic journals and chapters in edited books to exhibition publications and websites. I am an experienced public speaker, having presented at galleries/museums for the general public, and at academic conferences - including the Association for Art History Annual Conference 2025. I have peer reviewed for academic journals: 2023: Journal of Visual Art Practice; 2014-2016: International Journal for Art & Design Education. I have taught at art schools and universities, in Fine Art and Art History – now at University for the Creative Arts, delivering lectures, facilitating seminars and tutorials for BA and MA Visual Communication. I frequently work with artists, galleries and institutions developing critical contexts through writing.
