About Lucy James

Intent has driven everything I’ve done in my career. From about the age of 15, I knew I wanted to run my own business. I’d seen both of my parents do it, as well as my grandpa, and so the concept of working for myself just seemed right. Even at Uni, the society I started and ran made a decent profit. I spent the first ten years of my career learning how business worked, with a couple of years off to train as a SCUBA instructor and live the dream, even running a dive shop for a while, and then took the plunge into Exec Search. It’s incredible as a proving ground. We learn masses from senior execs on things that go well and awry, and the variation in work keeps things really interesting. Almost a mini-MBA. Then came a moment of clarity. Why did companies find the levels below Exec such a pain to recruit into? Why are they stuck with either agencies or managers posting ads in between their day jobs? Surely we can do better. I look at recruitment like this: it’s a process, just like any other, and can work really well, as a truly strategic part of a business’s growth. Most companies don't change their recruitment practices because they think it's too hard, too complicated or they don't think things can change. My mission is to get every recruitment environment fit for purpose. Hire the right people, and everybody wins. Happiness goes up, productivity goes up, attrition goes down. I set Quarsh up to tackle all sorts of people issues from business-as-usual hiring to strategic recruitment, which to me means that you're planning how and where you bring people in. Honesty, integrity and collaboration are the values that are fundamental to what we do at Quarsh. This idea filters into the businesses that we work best with.
