About Luiz Chamon

I am an assistant professor (tenure-track) of the center for applied math (CMAP) of the École Polytechnique, France. I am broadly interested in optimization, machine learning, signal processing, control, and how their intersection can be use to develop tools that enable inteligent systems to extract, process, and act on information. Currently, the main drive of my research is developing the theory, algorithms, and applications of constrained learning, a tool that enables the data-driven design of systems that satisfy requirements such as robustness, fairness, safety, smoothness, and invariance. I received my Ph.D. in electrical and systems engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, USA, in 2020, immediatelly followed by a postdoc at the Simons Institute of the University of California, Berkeley. I then joined the University of Stuttgart, Germany, as an independent research group leader from 2022 to 2024. Prior to moving to the US, I received my bachelor and master degrees in electrical engineering in 2011 and 2015 from the University of São Paulo, Brazil, where I am originally from. I received both the best student paper and the best paper awards at ICASSP 2020 and was recognized by the Signal Processing Society for my work for the editorial board of the Transactions on Signal Processing in 2018. In 2022, I received the Young Investigator award from the Division of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Caltech. In 2024, I became an ELLIS Scholar.
