About Lukas Best

As of 2025, I am the Senior Expert for AI, Data Science, and Analytics at SV SparkassenVersicherung in Stuttgart, Germany. Before joining SV in 2019, I worked as a Senior Data Science Consultant at the Institute for Finance and Actuarial Sciences (ifa) in Ulm, Germany. With a total of ten years of experience through various projects, I have gained AI, data science, and analytics expertise in all lines of business and cross-cutting applications in insurance. Major projects included machine learning based risk modeling in P&C, predictive event modeling for claim settlement optimization in health, and pattern detetection for sales controlling in life. I also coach practitioners on various topics in insurance data analytics. Through a multitude of other projects, I have augmented my skill set with, e.g, P&C pricing, actuarial modeling, and Solvency II. I am a certified actuary and a certified actuarial data scienctist (CADS) by the German Actuarial Society (DAV) and hold a PhD in actuarial science from Ulm University. My disseration focussed on the quantitative assessment of multi-year reserve and premium risks in non-life insurance. I hold two Master’s degrees in both actuarial science and statistics with awards for the master thesis, best Bachelor's and Master's degrees, and outstanding academic performance. Rounding off my professional qualifications are • broad and in-depth knowledge as well as experience in modern data science algorithms and tools; • proficiency with a multitude of statistical software and programming languages; • excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and German developed in business and academia; • in-depth knowledge in conducting research, synthesizing data into relevant communications, and publishing scientific results; and • the ability to work in an agile team with a constant drive for continuous improvement and an aptitude for self-development.
