About Luke Simmons

My name is Luke Simmons. I’m a 21 year old senior currently pursuing a degree in Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics at Virginia Tech, and express interest in working in the fields of drug engineering and implantable devices. Post-graduate I plan to attend medical school with an interest in orthopedic surgery or pursue an industry career in drug engineering or implantable devices. I am currently seeking a full-time position post-graduation in May of 2026, and would like to explore the industry of drug and medicinal engineering. Personal Engagement: I'm currently employed at Lewis Gale Hospital on Blacksburg, VA as a patient care technician on the med/surg floor. I supports nurses and physicians by monitoring patients, recording vital signs, and assisting with basic care needs. Myself and other PCTs play a key role in ensuring patient comfort, safety, and recovery during hospital stays. I've also worked on numerous non-engineering related personal projects including digital design, woodworking, photoshop, photography and video editing as well as working in retail at Pedigree Ski Shop in White Plains, New York for the 2021-2022 winter season. Volunteer Experience: Volunteered at my church organization serving as an usher, helping visitors find their seats, showing visitors in the right direction, collecting building funds and donations, collecting backpacks and school supplies for underprivileged children in Haiti, as well as volunteering in the Harrison Youth Lacrosse program mentoring young players, helping them to focus and sharpen their lacrosse skills. Achievements: Dean's list F22, S23, F23, S24, F24, S25 Named VP of eNABLE Prosthetics Club at VT Pre-Collegiate Involvement: National Honor Society High Honor Roll 4y Varsity Lacrosse Player DECA 5th place state qualifier 2020 DECA state qualifier 2022 Mastery in Mathematics (Duel Enrollment, Syracuse University) Undergraduate Research: In the past I've worked with the Carilion Clinic Center for Simulation, Research and Patient Safety and numerous surgeons and doctors to create a realistic, but easy and cheap to manufacture model of an anatomically accurate hand, that can be practiced on by medical students in fellowship and residency. I recently worked with Dr. Curtis Bower, a general surgeon of Carilion Clinic, and Dr. Vincent Wang, a biomaterals and biomechanics professor at Virginia Tech, researching and seeking to understand how the orientation, cut, and type of material affects its structural integrity and longevity post-hernia repair surgery.
