About Luli Buxton

This February, Luli Buxton entered her third decade of indigent defense advocacy. She conducted capital mitigation investigation from 2004 - 2017, and was appointed to state and federal cases nationwide. Since 2017 she has worked for Federal Defender Services of Wisconsin, where she provides noncapital mitigation services to indigent individuals charged with federal crimes. Buxton has worked with defense teams in the capacity of mitigation specialist, community analyst, videographer, and producer of demonstrative materials. She is a former NASAMS executive committee member, has trained extensively, and is a regular presenter as well as a mentor and consultant. Buxton holds a master's degree in clinical social work from the University of Chicago’s School of Social Administration, where she studied trauma, violence prevention, and the role of social work in criminal justice. She also holds a master's degree is public affairs journalism from Columbia College, where she wrote her thesis on One-Strike evictions from public housing developments. In 2003, she won a regional Emmy Award for the documentary Too Flawed To Fix: The Illinois Death Penalty Experience. Buxton approaches each case from a variety of angles, calling on her many skills to best present the mitigation story, which is each as unique as human life.
