About Lyra Griffiths

When I was in middle school, I took a tour of the CDC and heard someone describe “research” for the first time in my life. I thought to myself, “That is the coolest job, and you get paid!” • My passion: doing science which allows me to make a significant contribution to translational science. I love being at the bench, practicing and learning techniques.• My training: biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology.• I have had extensive experience performing many cutting-edge techniques- ChIPSeq- CRIPSR-Cas9 genome editing and dCas9-guided gene targeting- DNA and RNA preparation for Next Generation Sequencing- mouse iPSC line maintenance- cloning- Q-PCR, Western analysis, immunofluorescence, and reporter assays- mammalian cell culture, transfection, electroporation, stable cell line generation- mouse colony maintenance and dissection- lentiviral preparation and infection- yeast genetics• Some of my favorite projects- characterization of childhood tumors by whole genome sequencing and ChIPSeq- creating iPSCs from mouse retina- tracking GFP-tagged proteins in the cells of genetically modified yeast- establishing new mouse lines using CRISPR technology- defining the mitochondrial haplotypes of prostate cancer patients - developing a method to deliver epigenetic factors to the promoters of specific genes• Collaboration and Management- I have experience doing collaborative work and independent work- I have managed several high-profile projects, organizing the efforts and expertise of technicians, postdocs, and students- I enjoy encouraging lab-mates by contributing ideas and baked goods- I enjoy the process of training others because I get to see new scientists “light up” when they make an exciting discovery.
