Background

About Maarten Herman

After a short period as a Deck Officer in the Dutch Merchant Navy, I emigrated to the UK and started my career in the applied science of Oceanography. Following my degree (Plymouth), Master's (Southampton) and PhD research (Cambridge), I spent the next nine years employed as a Mathematical Modeller in the marine commercial sector (oil/gas/renewables), during which I became a Chartered Marine Scientist (CMarSci). In 2008 I decided to broaden my skills and re-train to become a Teacher of Mathematics. In 2009 I qualified (QTS) with a PGCE in Secondary Mathematics (Southampton). Since then, I have gained 10 years experience teaching Maths to students at secondary schools and a sixth form college on the Isle of Wight and was Course Leader for A level Maths provision during this time. Since January 2019 I have been employed as a Lecturer in Marine Engineering at Warsash Maritime School (Solent University), primarily teaching and leading several Maths and Ship Stability modules. Since then I have successfully completed the PGCHE for lecturing at Higher Education and have become a HEA Fellow.
