About MacHiko Kanetake

I am the Academic Director of the T.M.C. Asser Instituut and the Chair of the Executive Board of the Institute. I am also Professor of International Law and Security Governance at the University of Amsterdam. My research interests lie at the intersection of security and human rights. I am also interested in interfaces between domestic and international law. I served in 2017-2024 as an editorial board member of the Leiden Journal of International Law, one of the top journals of the field. Since September 2024, I am a Board member of the European Society of International Law (ESIL). Previously, I contributed to the ESIL as a Coordinating Committee member of the Interest Group on International Courts and Tribunals in 2018-2023. In addition, I co-organised the 2022 ESIL Annual Conference in Utrecht. In 2022-2024, I served as a member of the ESIL’s Diversity Advisory Body. Before joining Asser and UvA, I was as an Associate Professor in Public International Law at Utrecht University and the Director of the Master’s Programme in Public International Law in Utrecht. I have held visiting appointments at the NYU School of Law (Hauser Programme) and the Human Rights Program at Harvard Law School. I have obtained my PhD degree from Kyoto University.
