About MacKenzie Barr

Having recently graduated Summa Cum Laude from West Virginia University (WVU) with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology with an emphasis in Aquatic Therapy, I am thrilled to continue my academic journey by pursuing a Doctorate of Physical Therapy at WVU, starting in May 2024. Growing up in rural West Virginia provided me with a firsthand understanding of the significant healthcare disparities faced by many individuals within the Appalachian region. My passion for physical therapy was ignited by my papaw's journey through stroke rehabilitation, during which I witnessed the challenges faced by individuals in accessing essential rehabilitation services. Unfortunately, like many others in Appalachia, my papaw had to travel out of state to receive top-of-the-line care.As the population of Appalachia continues to age, the incidence of strokes is on the rise, exacerbating the need for accessible and comprehensive care. I feel my current experiences and desire for learning will help me become a successful physical therapist. I am dedicated to providing compassionate, evidence-based care that not only improves the mobility, independence, and quality of life of stroke survivors but also addresses the broader healthcare needs of rural communities in West Virginia and beyond.Through my future practice, I am determined to bridge the gap in healthcare access, ensuring that every individual, regardless of their geographic location, receives the high-quality care they deserve. I am eager to embark on this journey, knowing that each patient I serve presents an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in their life and the lives of those around them.
