Background
About Madelyn MacLaughlin
I'm a microbiology student with specialties in public health, disease ecology, molecular neuroscience, and the finer points of tarantula husbandry. In other words, I'm a giant nerd who loves all things biology and I am eager to take on any project set in front of me. My introduction to research was during my freshman in college with a project addressing the need for novel antibiotics. My proposed solution? Scorpion venom. After just a few weeks in the lab, I was hooked. I loved the challenge of thinking both logically and creatively, and when I was in the lab, I truly felt like anything was possible. Even if scorpion venom wasn't the miracle cure I'd hoped for, the experience I had working at that lab bench captivated me. I wanted nothing more than to be a scientist. Years later, I still feel that same spark of inspiration. Throughout my education at CU, I've worked in two different labs on campus, spoke at four symposiums, and soon I'll be a published researcher. In my many projects, I've been involved with every step of the scientific process, from experimental design to data analysis to final results. And I still can't get enough. Outside of school and work, I fill my time with science podcasts and YouTube channels. I'm also a visual artist inspired by all the beauty the natural world has to offer. And on the weekends, I'm usually deep in the Rocky Mountains skiing, hiking, or camping. I'm always looking for the next big project to immerse myself in. If you have an opportunity that needs a dynamic, hard-working, enthusiastic future-scientist, feel free to reach out to me and chat! Skills: R, primer design, cDNA synthesis, PCR, leadership, science communication
