About Madison Ramsay
I am an LLM student at Wits University (Environmental Law and Sustainability, with Mining and Energy Law). I graduated in 2021 with my LLB (Dean's List 2020-2021), and in 2019 with a BA With Law in International Relations (Golden Key International Honor Society, 2017). I have a passion for Environmental Law, particularly the environmental regulation of mining activities under NEMA. Currently, I am interested in South Africa's Just Transition towards a decarbonized energy sector, especially in light of our COP26 climate change commitments (writing sample on the 2022 'Vukani Deadly Air' judgement on request). I am passionate about environmental justice/equity, and I believe that a redistributive/transformative approach to South African environmental management is the way forward (writing sample on a Human Rights Approach to South African Waste Management on request). My experience in Environmental and Mining Law came from my vacation work at NSDV (November 2021; July 2022), where I was exposed to mining contracts, environmental due diligence and warranties, as well as applications for prospecting rights.
