About Madison Stanton

It has always been my goal to work with children and teens. I realized I enjoyed working in mental health after my student internship at UnityPoint Health – Methodist Child and Adolescent Psych. After graduation, I developed a passion for mental health and Recreational Therapy. Now I am currently working as a Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialist at UnityPoint Health - Meriter Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and at Heartland Farm Sanctuary. My goal is to teach kids about creating opportunities for themselves, finding a passion, enjoying adventures in life, and finding moments of happiness in every day. The Recreational Therapy groups I lead explore positive leisure activities that helps improve your physical, emotional, social, and mental health. These groups focus on developing hobbies, creating leisure balance, building healthy routines, and socializing with peers in a positive way. Some of the kids that I get to work with one on one with may qualify for a Recreational Therapy assessment if struggling with little to no leisure interest and maintaining healthy balance. The assessment that I have helped create and edit helps identify interests, barriers to participation, and what they find important in their leisure. This assessment helps create personalized goals and recommendations. I am continuing to learn and share my passion about Recreational Therapy. My biggest strength is being able to quickly and easily see skills, gifts and talents that people don’t even realize they have.
