Background

About Maggie McCarthy

I am a fifth year Applied Math student at Memorial University of Newfoundland hoping to graduate with honours in the spring of 2025. I have four summers of research experience with two professors in Scientific Computing. In particular, I have been working on creating and applying different physical solvers, adaptive mesh methods, and solution discovery methods for solving PDE's. I am also actively learning about and using Git. All of my numerical results thus far have been computed using Python (Firedrake (FEM), Colab, IDLE, ssh, GitHub) and written about in LaTeX (Overleaf). In between my summer research, I held a MUCEP position in 2022 where I assisted in writing and proctoring local highschool math competitions (LaTeX). I am interested in solving problems in mathematics and engineering numerically. Along with mathematics, I am pursuing a minor and a possible major in philosophy. I find that both mathematics and philosophy compliment each other really well. Both subject areas can help me become a well rounded student who can think critically about real world problems. Outside of the academic world, I love hiking, hot yoga, running, travelling, and spending time with friends and family. I have also founded and currently run the Mindfulness Society at MUN! My favorite way to pass time is to hike the east coast trail with my miniature poodle as well as with any friends up to the task!
