Background

About Maissa Khatib

Driven educator with more than 17 years experience teaching in higher education, developing curriculum, advising, directing academic and funded programs, designing and implementing funded projects, supervising and training lecturers and research assistants. I received my Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). I’ve received numerous honors and awards including the Institute for Policy & Economic Development Award at UTEP. I also received the Department of Languages and Linguistics Outstanding Faculty Award. In addition, I was the recipient of a grant overseen by the National Foreign Languages Center at the University of Maryland (2012, 2015-2020). While pursuing my Ph.D, I worked as the director of the Arabic Program in the Department of Languages and Linguistics and taught various Women’s Studies courses with a global focus, such as Women in Islam, Women and Conflict in the Middle East, and Women's Health. I also worked as a co-investigator and the lead instructor for the Institute for Policy and Economic Development at UTEP and Arabic interpreter for The Hospitals of Providence. Currently, I am a faculty member in the Women’s and Gender Studies Program. In 2017, I served as the chair of the 8th Annual Women’s History Month Conference. Besides teaching and seeking grants, I develop faculty-led study abroad projects. I presented my previous research at national meetings including the Southwest Social Science Association Conference. These experiences have provided me with valuable knowledge and insight into the design and implementation of research studies, academic programs and funded projects. Broadly, my research concerns healthcare and cultural competency, acculturation and integration, health disparities, and migrant women's health and women's empowerment.
