About Maja Thiele

I have more than a decade of expertise from academia in biomarkers, early disease detection, steatotic liver disease, and the impact of alcohol, diabetes, and obesity on liver health. My research focuses on screening approaches, biomarker exploration using 'omics technologies, development and validation of non-invasive tests, ML algorithms, and liver stiffness (elastography). I have a particular interest in the liver as a regulator of non-communicable diseases, and the pathophysiology of alcohol-related liver disease, MASLD, and MetALD. Research Leadership: LOTUS - Longitudinal omics to unravel steatotic liver disease heterogeneity (coordinator, Innovation Fund Denmark) DECIDE - Decision aids and monitoring biomarkers in steatotic liver disease (coordinator, Novo Nordisk Foundation) Q-Liver - Quantum mathematics to improve referral pathways for steatotic liver disease (coordinator, Innovation Fund RSYD) LIVERAIM - A biomarker-based platform for early diagnosis of chronic liver disease to enable personalized therapy (workpackage leader, EU Innovative Health Initiative) LiverScreen - Screening for liver fibrosis population-based study across European countries (workpackage leader, EU Horizon2020) GALAXY - Gut and liver axis to understand alcohol-related liver disease (workpackage leader, EU Horizon2020) Vice director for FLASH Liver Research Centre at Odense University Hospital and University of Southern Denmark since 2017. Scientific merits- 150+ scientific publications, with 42% among top 10% most cited worldwide. H-index 40, field-weighted citation impact of 4.6 (4 = being cited four times more than the field-specific world average)- Associate editor for JHEP Reports- Conducts 15-20 annual invited international talks and/or chairs- Contributor to international guidelines from EASL, AASLD, EFSUMB, WFUMB, and the Baveno collaboration- Commissions of trust: Academic chair for The Liver Forum’s program on alcohol in steatotic liver diseases; Advisory Board for Grip-on-MASH and ID-Liver; Steering committee for SALVE: Study of alcohol-related liver disease in Europe; board member for Alcohol & Society- Awarded United European Gastroenterology’s Rising Star in 2022 and University of Southern Denmark’s Best Science Communicator in 2019.
