About Majel Connery

I'm a vocalist, composer, podcast host and musicologist based in NYC. Over the past 15 years, I've conceived and executed multimedia productions and concerts around the country, working primarily in the realm of experimental voice and opera. I also maintain an active teaching presence, conducting classes and workshops at universities like Princeton, Stanford and UC Berkeley. As an artist and a scholar, my strength lies in connecting big ideas to real-world creative practice. Whether in the classroom, or as a moderator in front of an audience, I help people navigate the gap between making art and thinking about it. In 2021, I launched the podcast, A Music of Their Own (NPR/CapRadio) where I interview women in music to track the parallel processes of self-discovery and finding a musical voice. As a composer and singer, I write music for the environment, giving voice to the natural world. My song cycle, The Rivers are our Brothers, is currently on tour with Grammy-winning choir Chanticleer. A sucker for music you can dance to, I also tour and perform with my art-rock duo Sky Creature. We're currently recording a full-length album with producer Steve Albini. I hold an A.B. in music from Princeton, and an M.A./Ph.D. in ethnomusicology and musicology respectively from the University of Chicago.
