Background

About Malcolm Donalson

After receiving the B.A. in Classics and History in 1974, I first taught Latin and World History, as well as Beginning Greek, at Marianna High School, Marianna, Florida, publishing articles in Classical Outlook. While pursuing the M.A. in Classics and then the Ph.D. in Humanities, I taught for five years in the Department of Classics, serving as a research assistant for Prof. David Levenson, continuing to publish articles in Classical Journal and Classical Outlook. Afterwards, I taught at Episcopal High School and the Middle-Magnet Program in Baton Rouge, La. and completed my dissertation, later published by Edwin Mellen Press. I began teaching at the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science (Latin, Greek, Intro. to Egyptology, Roman Civilization, Church History, etc.) at the inception of the school in 1991 as Asst. Prof. and was promoted to Professor in 2003. In addition to numerous articles and reviews, I have written five scholarly books published by Edwin Mellen: Jerome's Chronicon: A Translation and Historical Commentary (1996); The Domestic Cat in Roman Civilization The Cult of Isis in the Roman Empire. Isis Invicta (2003); History of the Wolf in Western Civilization (2006); A Translation of 'De Virginitate Perpetua Sanctae Mariae'(2011). Favorable reviews of the works have been available in a number of periodicals, including Journal of Roman Studies, International Journal of the Classical Tradition, Religious Studies Review, Cloelia, and The Catholic Historical Review, and online at Bibliography of Ancient Egypt (Ptahhotep.com), Penelope Bokhandel, Magicbeandip.com/stjerome (including five-star review), The Cauldron, and oxbowbooks.com. My activities and sponsorships at ASMS have included student tours of Italy 2007) and of Greece (1994), and sponsorship of the Interfaith Club and National Latin Honor Society. Additional visits to Greece, Ireland, Italy, Morocco, Sicily, Spain and Turkey have enhanced my teaching as well as my publications. Specialties: Areas of research and special interests include animals in the ancient world, Egyptian religion, Roman religion, ecclesiastical/imperial Roman history, and Patristic literature, as well as Roman reenactment.
