About Malik Barry

I am a Towson University graduate with a major in Political Science and a minor in International Studies. During my freshman year, I had the privilege of serving as Treasurer of a freshman branch of SGA where I balanced the budget and sought to close the divide caused by online school and the COVID pandemic. I was honored to receive the first-ever Honorables of Color scholarship which enabled me to form a deeper connection with my campus. These opportunities led to serving as a legislative and research intern for Senator Elfreth in the Maryland General Assembly to provide comprehensive grants to recently unemployed constituents. Our work providing menstrual sanitary products in the school district and prohibiting the sexual exploitation of incarcerated women by law enforcement officers were the highlights of our work to expand rights and liberties to those who are often disenfranchised. As a sophomore, I served as the Student Director of Programming for the Honors College which helped reinforce my communication and student leadership skills. I helped formulate the Honors Civic Engagement Council to encourage political participation and invited gubernatorial candidates, senators, and law clerks to discuss the importance of legislation and politics within modern society. I worked as an Orientation Leader where I won an award for being the best Orientation Leader due to my communication skills and ability to connect with the masses. In my junior year, I was nominated to be on the National Student Issues Convention Panel as well as the Maryland Collegiate Honors Council Panel. Due to my leadership, I received the Vice President of Student Affairs Award and was nominated to be a member of the Women's Leadership Collective of Outstanding TU Student Leaders led by former and longest-serving State Superintendent of Education Nancy Grasmick. I worked as a Barista at Starbucks which allowed me to foster new relationships and learn to multitask in an arduous setting. In my senior year, I won the TU Institutional Diversity Study Abroad Scholarship which aided me in studying abroad in Lyon, France during my Fall term where I studied French language and International Relations. Upon my return, I began a fellowship program on Sarah Elfreth's primary campaign for Maryland's third congressional district. I presently work at Glenstone Museum where I am a Cafe Attendant. I volunteer in Baltimore City and Montgomery County, which allows me to give back and make a positive impact on veteran communities and populations where food deserts are pervasive
