About Mandeep Singh

Agriculture is our wisest pursuit, because it will in the end contribute most to real wealth, good morals, and happiness.” – Thomas Jefferson This quote speaks to me and drives my passion for advancing agronomy. Growing up on a farm, I have spent over a decade working in every aspect of farming—from pre-sowing seedbed preparation to post-harvest handling of crops like cotton, rice, and wheat. I have put in long hours doing tough tasks, like manually weeding rice fields in the scorching heat, often over 100°F. These experiences didn’t just build my character; they also gave me a deep love for agriculture and a strong respect for the hard work that farmers put into their livelihoods. Along with my farming background, I have over seven years of experience in managing small-plot field trials that involved pre-season planning, designing field layouts, developing and implementing protocols, carrying out trials, documenting agronomic practices, and collecting and analyzing data. These research projects included optimizing sowing times to improve cowpea fodder quality and quantity, studying the effect of cover crops on soil health, and researching strategies to manage herbicide-resistant weeds. I have also systematically reviewed and analyzed decades of data on the water use of weeds, their relation to water stress, and the effect of row spacing on weed suppression. I am proud to have received the Outstanding Graduate Student Award from the North Central Weed Science Society and won First Place in the Graduate Team category of the Western Society of Weed Science at the National Weed Contest in 2023. I am committed to serving our agricultural community by contributing to sustainable practices, ultimately aligning with the profound impact Jefferson envisioned for agriculture.
