Background
About Mandy Archibald
Dr. Archibald is a nurse academic and artist focused on applied transdisciplinary research for impact in chronic illness contexts. She is a Research Manitoba New Investigator in health, and CIHR-Sickkids New Investigator. She completed her PhD (University of Alberta, 2015), and a CIHR postdoctoral fellowship in knowledge translation for a transdisciplinary Centre for Research Excellence with Professor Alison Kitson. Mandy has published >60 articles & book chapters, has over 50 artistic works in circulation, and has received 35 awards for research innovation and excellence, including a 4th place national ranking in the CIHR fellowship competition (2016), recognition as one of Canada's Top 150 nurses, and an Edmonton Top 40 Under 40. Mandy is involved in numerous research projects with collaborators worldwide related to her research interests in person-centered chronic illness and collaborative (and creative) knowledge translation. Her methodological interests involve arts-based and mixed methods research, transdisciplinary and co-design research, and living labs. Mandy is skilled in developing creative, co-design resources for patients and families managing chronic illness in the community, which we conceptualize as patient-driven arts-based knowledge translation. She also challenges dominant narratives and provides humanizing (re) framing of health and illness experiences through arts based research practice. Examples resulting from this art-science interface include an award winning interdisciplinary performance, and a forthcoming art-science exhibition at the contemporary venue, praxis ARTSPACE in April, 2019. Dr. Archibald is on the Board of the Manitoba Medical Services Foundation (MMSF), serves on the curriculum committee of the Canadian Child Health Clinician Scientist Program (CCHCSP), is Associate Editor for the International Journal of Multiple Research Approaches (IJMRA) and peer-reviews for numerous journals (E.g, Journal of Mixed Methods Research, Worldviews on Evidence Based Nursing, Nursing Inquiry, Journal of Advanced Nursing, BMJ Open). She is the recipient of a recent Rady Innovation Grant where she leads an interdisciplinary team in patient-centered applied research at the cutting edge of knowledge translation science. Dr. Archibald consults on research methods, specifically qualitative, mixed methods, arts based, and inclusive approaches to co design.
