About Mannu Maken

I am a PhD in Chemistry with a strong foundation in nanoscience and technology, and over a decade of hands-on laboratory experience in materials chemistry, organic synthesis, and advanced characterization techniques. My research has spanned the development and functionalization of lanthanide upconverting nanoparticles, mesoporous silica shells and coatings, and transition metal oxides for environmental and photonic applications. During my doctoral and postdoctoral work, I focused on enhancing the luminescence efficiency of lanthanide nanoparticles via NIR dye conjugation, as well as the synthesis of mesoporous silica-embedded catalysts for organic transformations such as benzaldehyde oxidation. I also explored water remediation strategies using engineered nanomaterials. My laboratory expertise includes extensive hands-on experience with a wide range of advanced instrumentation and characterization techniques, including: NMR Spectroscopy UV-Vis & Near-Infrared (NIR) Spectroscopy FTIR TEM & SEM Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) X-ray Diffraction (XRD) MALDI-TOF Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) GC-MS Currently, I apply this strong laboratory foundation to my role as a Chemistry and Biology instructor at Alexander Academy, where I lead laboratory programs, design experimental modules, and mentor students in hands-on research projects. I am deeply passionate about bringing inquiry-based, lab-driven science education into the classroom and empowering students to think and work like scientists. My goal is to bridge the gap between academic research and secondary science education by fostering a learning environment rooted in real-world experimentation, critical thinking, and collaborative discovery.
