Background
About Marc Ablang
I'm a Registered Nurse with 21 years of professional nursing experience specialized in Ophthalmology, EENT, Navigation Assisted Sinus Surgeries, General Surgery and Orthopedic Surgery. I have worked within the Alberta Health Services for 15 years and in the Philippines for 6 years. In that time, I had experience working in different hospitals, worked different nursing roles and also became a Nurse Clinical Instructor before I moved to Canada. Currently I start my days at 6:00 am or 7:30 am depending on where I am assigned, and we start with a staff huddle; organizing, delegating and carrying out room assignments for the Operating Room. Once room assignments have been received, I receive orders from the nurse team lead to scrub or circulate for cases of the day. If I am assigned at the Preoperative Area, I admit patients and get them ready for surgery. This includes history taking, nursing assessments, giving pre-op medications and starting intravenous lines. I currently work at an Orthopedic Day Surgery department where we cater to 4 or 5 surgeries a day. After a full day, I head home to my two crazy boys and my lovely wife. Recently I had a nursing student shadow me for 6 months, and after rigorous training, she passed her nursing course and got a job in the hospital I am currently working in. Over my 14-year career, I have assisted on over cataract surgeries, retinal surgeries, glaucoma surgeries, 700 airway cases, 400 C.T. navigated assisted sinus surgeries, 250 corneal transplants, 500 orthopedic cases and 200 Abdominal surgeries to date, on a scrub or circulating role not to mention the hundreds of minor surgeries I assisted in the Eye Clinic in the Eye Institute of Alberta! I am a task oriented person. I set aside personal matters and stay focused on the task at hand. I work hard under pressure. When it comes to serving the patients, I am committed in their care and I make sure that their experience in the hospital is an easy one. After all, going for surgery is already a very stressful thing, if I can alleviate their stress before they go for surgery and make their experience a pleasant one, that is a win for me. I have a BCLS-HCP Certification from the Heart and stroke foundation which is annually updated. I am certified to practice as an Operating Room Technician by the CLPNA and CRNA. I have a certificate to provide IV Therapy for patients who need parenteral nutrition and blood transfusions.
