Background
About Marc Bernier
Marc Bernier National Director Emergencies, Operational Analytical Laboratories and Research Division Water Science & Technology Directorate Science & Technology Branch Environment Canada Marc Bernier holds a Bachelor and Masters in Environmental Chemistry from the Université de Moncton, Moncton, NB. He is currently the Director of Environment Canada’s Emergencies, Operational Analytical Laboratories and Research Support Division. As part of the Water Science and Technology Directorate within the Science & Technology Branch his Division provides for the laboratory science needs of EC’s water research community, as well as monitoring, enforcement and emergencies programs. The Division’s team of scientific experts provide accredited, legally defensible science to enable sound decision-making and accountability through responsive, cost effective laboratory and technical services that meet international standards of quality. Areas of expertise reside in analytical chemistry, toxicological advice, emergency response to oil spills in support and collaboration to national programs and regional priorities. The biggest challenge is to consolidate 8 different scientific laboratories with specific expertise areas into a single integrated network while delivering on the department’s priorities. As a first strong step/achievement/milestone, a single national laboratory information management system is currently being implemented to all of the laboratories. Marc also worked for the Canadian Wildlife Service as the Species at Risk Program Coordinator for the Atlantic Region. The primary role of this position was to provide policy advice and information on the implementation of the federal Species at Risk Act (SARA) to various stakeholders.
