Background
About Marc McCarthy
During College I studied and graduated with an honours degree in Food Science and Technology in University College Cork. For my final year project in Cereal Technology, we undertook the formulation of a gluten free pasta that was as palatable as regular pasta. This was to be aimed at the gluten intolerant, Coelic, consumer market. In 2009, undertook my masters degree in Public Health and Epidemiology in the School of Medicine, UCC and completed this in 2010. Upon graduating, I was quickly taken on board with Kentech as IT Support. I spent 8 months with Kentech, supporting all off site IT issues remotely, alongside the groups IT Manager, from their Cork premises, until I returned to UCC, and began work in the Microbiolgy Department and the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre. Currently, I am the High Throughput Robotics Specialist and Research Officer in the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre and is an active member of the education and outreach team, spearheading APC social media and YouTube presences, providing IT and graphic design for APC events e.g. The Experience of Illness, Science for All, Science Raps, Science Trax and a key member in the development and delivery of many APC outreach initiatives. I have trained as part of the Explorers Education Programme with the Marine Institute, Galway, and been involved in the running of science summer camps in both UCC and the LifetimeLab. I currently oversee, as administrator, the Food Industry Training Unit website in UCC. I have been involved in the organisation of Science Raps competition since 2009 as well as the APC Droppin’ Science @ The Culture Club (DCOS Public Engagement Programme/ESOF 2012) and Rapping Science with APC & Stevie G (CuriousCity/DCOS Public Engagement Programme). As of September 2012, I am the Technical and Research representative for the College of SEFS(Science Engineering and Food Science) College Council.
