Northvolt was founded in 2016 with the mission to build the world’s greenest battery cell, with a minimal carbon footprint and the highest ambitions for recycling, to enable the European transition to renewable energy. Northvolt’s team of experts is building the next generation battery cell factory focused on process innovation, scale and vertical integration. Once completed, the main factory Northvolt Ett in Skellefteå (northern Sweden) will be Europe’s largest battery cell factory and produce 32 GWh worth of capacity annually. In September 2019, the Volkswagen AG and Northvolt signed a 50/50 joint venture to enable a sustainable transport future. The partnership will establish a lithium-ion battery gigafactory in Salzgitter, Germany. Northvolt Zwei takes its design from the Northvolt blueprint for battery manufacturing developed for Northvolt Ett and will be will be a state-of-the-art facility. Start of construction is planned for 2021 and start of operations at the beginning of 2024, initially adding 16 GWh of annual cell production capacity to Europe with intentions to increase capacity over time in order to meet future demand. Northvolt Zwei will share much in common with its sister factory, Northvolt Ett, including a minimal CO2 footprint, heavily automated processes and advanced cell manufacturing techniques. It will produce lithium-ion cells exclusively for electric vehicles from the VW Group which will launch over the coming decade.
