About Marcel Grooten

As an educator, researcher, and adventurer, I bring together a love for education with a deep commitment to sustainability and global collaboration. My journey is driven by connecting people, cultures, and ideas—whether I’m guiding students in a classroom, exploring new sounds on a festival stage, or diving into the complexities of marine conservation. My academic path began in 1996 at Breda University of Applied Sciences, where I’ve been teaching since 2007. I specialize in sports management, international events, and sustainability, with a focus on mentoring students facing educational challenges. Seeing them grow and succeed is a constant source of inspiration, fueled by insights gained through diverse international projects. Volunteering has taken me across the globe—from Fiji and the Cook Islands to Indonesia, Maldives, the Philippines and Malaysia. In these regions, I’ve contributed to coral research, wildlife rehabilitation, and environmental education. Experiences such as working with endangered macaques or studying marine ecosystems have deepened my understanding of global collaboration and conservation. For nearly two decades, I was the proud owner of an alternative music and sports bar in Breda, a vibrant space that brought together music lovers, students, and creatives. This venue became a cultural hotspot, blending experimental programming with an informal, welcoming atmosphere, making it a cherished part of the local and international scene. In addition to my academic and entrepreneurial ventures, I’ve worked as a crew member for legendary bands like dEUS and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, and collaborated with professional cycling teams during events like the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia. My passion for these fields led to a published study on visitor motivations at cycling events in Europe and Australia, featured in an international book on sports tourism. With a Master’s in Leisure and Tourism Studies and extensive cross-sector experience, I thrive on finding new challenges. Whether bridging academic disciplines or exploring innovative solutions, my focus remains on creating meaningful impact—locally and globally. And yes, I’m deeply concerned about the ripple effects of drug use at music events, from biodiversity loss to societal well-being and the resilience of our students in the leisure and events industry. These issues demand our collective attention and action.
