About Marcel van Oosterhout

Marcel works as executive director for the Erasmus Centre for Data Analytics (ECDA), center of expertise on the socio-economic impact of data, AI and immersive technologies of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. ECDA hosts a community of over 350 researchers and connects them with external stakeholders. We facilitate applied (transdisciplinary) research and active lifelong learning for professionals in the domains of responsible AI, data, digitalization, and making it tangible through immersive technology. We hold the belief that data, algorithms, and AI act as vehicles to bring the necessary changes and transitions required to confront current and future societal challenges and to move closer to achieving objectives like the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We recognize our responsibility to equip our society with emerging talent that is proficient in data and AI – preparing them to navigate the swiftly evolving AI landscape in an effective and thoughtful manner. This approach should contribute to society in a positive and sustainable way. Marcel also has an advising role to the Erasmus Centre for Energy Transition. This centre of expertise, helps students prepare for a leadership role in the energy transition, and collaborates with companies and public organizations on research projects that help accelerate the energy transition. Marcel likes to initiate and develop innovative ideas and projects on the edge of science and practice, which combine people, technology, knowledge and innovation. Marcel can be characterized as analytical, ambitious, creative, social, loyal, team-player, result and market driven, multitasker, optimist, networker. Linking the academic world with the business world gives him a lot of energy. In 2010 he finished his dissertation, titled "Business Agility and Information Technology in Service Organizations"​. The dissertation analyses how organizations can become more agile and how Information Technology can support organizational agility.
