Background

About Marco Cursi

I was born in Milan in 1964 and pursued my passion for the intersection of technology and medicine by graduating in Electronic Engineering with a specialization in Bioengineering at the Politecnico di Milano in 1991. My thesis, focused on EEG signal coherence analysis through multivariate autoregressive models, laid the foundation for my professional journey in clinical neurophysiology. Following my graduation, I served as a Squad Commander in the Army's 33rd Shunting Battalion "Ambrosiano," where I contributed to a project developing mobile field maintenance labs for diverse military equipment. This rewarding experience earned me a Certificate of Merit from Lt. General Franco Angioni. Since then, I have been part of the Clinical Neurophysiology Unit at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, where I currently serve as IT Consultant for the Neurology Department. My responsibilities encompass setting up and managing diagnostic equipment, training staff and students, and developing clinical databases and electronic medical records. My interests include EEG preprocessing and analysis (using tools like EEGLab, LORETA, and Brainstorm), intraoperative monitoring, and statistical analysis. Over my career, I have supported more than 500 surgical interventions in neurosurgery, vascular, and orthopedic surgery, while contributing to numerous peer-reviewed publications (h-index: 23). Alongside my hospital role, I have been teaching as a Contract Lecturer since 2001, covering topics such as Medical Informatics and Biomedical Image Processing at institutions including the University of Milan, Milan Bicocca, University of Urbino, and Vita-Salute San Raffaele University. Beyond my professional life, music has always been my passion. With formal studies in classical music, I now perform as the keyboardist for Fahrenheit, the Official Italian Toto Tribute Band, a role I've enjoyed for nearly 20 years. I am also an avid photographer and multimedia creator, and I channel my energy into martial arts, having practiced judo for eight years and currently training in traditional Shotokan karate.
