About Marco Yip

I started working in community recreation as a volunteer in high school. Since then, I have worked as a Summer Daycamp Supervisor, Front Desk Attendant, Youth Development Coordinator, and finally as a Community Facilities Coordinator for the City of Richmond. Concurrently, I attained my Bachelors of Arts in History from the University of British Columbia. Working full time hours in a wide breadth of positions while pursuing higher learning has taught me to be able to context-switch and adapt quickly while balancing multiple priorities at the same time. Working at a Community Centre, my primary duties were to manage and supervise everything from the program registration process to the design and execution of recreation programs and services. I discovered from this work my obsession with leveraging technology to improve workflows, solve problems quickly, and ultimately improve customer experience. I began exploring things like algorithms in Microsoft Excel and content management systems for our websites, which is where I discovered my interest in software engineering. In 2023, I decided to pursue this interest and I was hired as a Dev Degree Intern at Shopify. Concurrently, I began to pursue a Bachelors of Science in Applied Computer Science at the Dominican University of California. I am incredibly excited for this next chapter of my life, and the knowledge that I will gain in this experience!
