About Marcus Haag

I am interested in the way neurons interact within neuronal networks in order to allow us to process complex tasks that involve different areas of the brain. I am also interested how such networks are altered during disease (e.g. epilepsy). ATM, I am exploring the potential of optogenetic interventions and stem-cell transplantations in restoring vision to help over 40 million blind people worldwide (WHO). On a more cognitive level, I am also currently investigating the potential of eye movements as biomarkers for a range of visual dysfunctions. Eye tracking using widely available goggles could serve as simple and affordable means to diagnose and possibly treat such eye movements. Given the still persisting need of animals in medical research (also in our lab), I am particularly interested in improving the welfare of such animals. To do so, I am constantly improving enrichment techniques (e.g. touch-screen devices) and surgical procedures (e.g. biocompatible implants). All in all, I see myself as a neuroscientist with a skillset that is more focused on methodological research and research with an immediate and tangible purpose.
