Background
About Marcus T. Wright
It is my absolute passion to help young adults navigate higher education to achieve their personal, academic, and professional goals. Utilizing a holistic approach to advise, mentor, and teach these students, I make it my mission to provide support that is characterized by compassion, empathy, and understanding. I have the unbelievable privilege of advising Sociology majors and minors at the University of Pennsylvania. These are some of the most amazing people I've ever met. They are tireless, innovative, game-changing, fearless, and compassionate individuals. To be a small part of their incredible journeys is amazing. I also have the privilege of working with college students in several other capacities, including advising incoming students and premajors in Penn's College of Arts & Sciences, and teaching at institutions such as Penn, Widener University, and Holy Family University. As a higher education professional, I’ve engaged in countless roles that have required leadership acumen, emotional intelligence, collaboration with various stakeholders, and keen attention to detail. Also, as a researcher, I analyze various aspects of inequality in higher education, especially that which impacts first-generation students. Aside from my work in higher education, I love to write and have written three books. My most recent effort,[Henry’s Hoodie!](2023), is a children’s book centering the experience of a Black boy as he doubts whether he can do great things without his precious hoodie! My previous book,[Paradox of the Learning Game: The Promise and Plight of Video Games and Learning](2017) is a treatise that examines how video games can be used as powerful learning resources. My debut young adult fantasy novel many years ago, Raincloud [2007], follows a teenage boy who must lead a powerful group of people that his city – and his father – hates. I believe so much in the power of books. As a young boy growing up in a single-parent, poor household in North Philadelphia, I read books everyday and wrote many stories since I was not allowed to go outside aside from school. Reading and writing "gave me life" during the turbulent times of my childhood. For more about me and my work, please visit my website:
