Background
About Maree Domelow
I began my town planning career more than eighteen years ago, and have been a Natural Hazards planner for over five years. In the past I have been employed as a Senior Planner in development assessment, planning appeals, customer service / planning enquiries, and strategic planning, as a rural land use planner and an indigenous and community land use planner. Prior to 2007, I was employed as an Aboriginal Women Rangers Coordinator, a Natural Resource Management Facilitator and Project Management Officer. Over many years I have been employed as a supervisor, a team leader, a coordinator and a/manager in various capacities, and have always loved the opportunity to mentor and build capacity of my colleagues, while also learning and growing my own skills along the way. My current role feels like my ‘forever home’ – it brings together my experiences as a town planner in urban and rural land use planning, my technical understanding of climate, science, environmental and conservation land management, and my passion for humanities and engaging and communicating with our communities in such an important endeavour – to improve understanding and community resilience to risk and natural hazards through strategic and long term land use planning. My role in the City of Gold Coast’s Natural Hazards team within the City Planning branch contributes to the team approach we use to undertake modelling, mapping, project work, policy development, drafting and community engagement in applying a risk-based approach to developing resilience to natural hazards through land use planning. I have a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Environmental Management. I have been employed in state government in Darwin in the Northern Territory and local government at the City of Gold Coast, and been fortunate to work extensively in the two cities I love most. I have had experience working with small and big employers, private and public. Although I have lived and worked in remote Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory, I now call the thriving and growing metropolis of the Gold Coast my home again. Although I have previously lived in Pitjantjatjara-Yankuntjatjarra, Larrakia and Burarra country and pay my respects to those communities and their elders, today I pay my respects to the Yugambeh Aboriginal elders past, present and emerging, and in particular to the Kombumerri language group, for my connection to the Gold Coast and my long-term on-and-off home.
