Background
About Margaret Gilbert
I am a passionate and experienced educator with 20 years of teaching in science, STEM, and outdoor education. Currently serving as Head of the Science Department at Old Trail School, I lead with a focus on curriculum innovation and collaboration. I have designed engaging middle school science and STEM programs, including hands-on labs, engineering design projects, and a middle school Outdoor Education program that fosters a deep connection between students and nature. I create dynamic experiences that blend science, engineering, and the outdoors, ranging from rocket launches and 3-D printing to field-based journaling in national parks. As department head, I mentor faculty, align curriculum with best practices, and foster a culture of collaboration and innovation. I have successfully secured multiple grants to expand programming, including Vernier physics equipment to elevate our physics curriculum and a wide range of naturalist tools to outfit our school’s Field Station. STEM and outdoor learning opportunities were built from the ground up by equipping labs with modern tools such as a 3-D printer and GlowForge laser cutter. Beyond my school, I’ve contributed nationally and internationally. I was selected to participate in NASA’s Living With a Star program, presenting at conferences in Puerto Rico, Arizona, and Alaska to support science programming and teacher leadership. I also served as a field researcher with the Earthwatch Institute, joining the South African Penguins Expedition to support conservation research and bring real-world science back into the classroom. Above all, I am dedicated to sparking curiosity, building student confidence, and cultivating the next generation of problem solvers, naturalists, and global citizens. I am always excited to connect with others who are passionate about transforming how students learn science and engage with the world. Key Skills & Expertise: • Grant Writing & Fundraising for STEM and Outdoor Education • Curriculum Development (NGSS-aligned, Backwards Design ) • STEM Lab & Program Development (3-D printing, GlowForge, engineering design) • Outdoor Education & Place-Based Learning • Leadership as Head of Science Department (K–8) • Public Speaking & Conference Presentations (NASA, Earthwatch, regional PD) • Mentorship & Advisory Programming
