About Maria Hoffmann

Dr. Maria Hoffmann received her master’s degree in food chemistry from the University of Hamburg in 2007 and her Ph.D. in Microbial Genetics and Evolution from the University of Hamburg in 2012. She did a postdoctoral fellowship at FDA/Center for Veterinary Medicine. During that time she has worked on foodborne outbreaks that involved drug resistance pathogens using whole genome sequencing. She has been with the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) since 2013. Dr. Hoffmann is the subject matter expert for long-read sequence technology at CFSAN, and she is the lead scientist for application of precision genomics to better understand the persistence and adaptation of foodborne pathogens in the food supply to help better to treat foodborne contaminations. Dr. Hoffmann is a technical advisor for Codex Alimentarius Committee on Food Hygiene (CCFH), the convenor of the WGS working group on AMR under ISO TC 34/SC 9 (Microbiology of food and feed) and an active member of IAFP.
